Baytown, Texas is a city in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area located in Harris County and partly in Chambers County. One of the area’s first settlers, Nathaniel Lynch, was responsible for establishing a ferry crossing at the San Jacinto River/Buffalo Bayou. That very same ferry service is actually still in operation today and now goes under the name Lynchburg Ferry. The area surrounding Baytown was discovered to be rich in oil, leading to the construction of several refineries in the area, including the Baytown Refinery which would go on to become one of the largest Exxon refineries in the world. The discovery of oil in the area also helped grow the population of Baytown over the years, drawing a large number of people looking for work including immigrants.
While the city is now known as Baytown, that wasn’t always the case. The area where Baytown sits today was originally made up of three separate towns; Goose Creek, Pelly and East Baytown. Officials from the three cities finally agreed to consolidate and Baytown, as it’s known today, was officially founded January 24, 1948.
