Conroe, Texas is the county seat of Montgomery County, falling within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metro area, located 40 miles north of Houston. Named after a Union Cavalry officer and prominent Houston lumberman Isaac Conroe, the city’s economy was predominantly dependent on monies coming from the lumber and oil industries in the area. Originally called “Conroe’s Switch,” the area saw a boost in its population during the late 19th century, thanks in no small part to the lumber demands on the piney wood forest in the area. Back in the 1930s, Conroe had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the United States, thanks mostly to oil profits.
Following the construction of Interstate 45 in 1971, Houstonians started to settle in Conroe and its surrounding communities. During the first decade of the 21st century, Conroe attracted numerous new residents from the Houston area, turning it from a sleepy, semi-rural town to a residential hotbed, seeing a drastic increase in the construction of new homes. In 2012, the U.S. Census Bureau officially designated the surrounding area near Conroe and The Woodlands as a “large urbanized transit area,” meaning an area populated with over 200,000 residents, in turn making the city eligible to receive federal transportation funds.
