Galveston is a coastal city in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metro area of Texas. Located on Galveston Island, the city of Galveston serves as the county seat and is the second largest city in Galveston County in terms of population. The island was originally home to the Karankawa and Akokisa tribes who referred to the area as “Auia.” Infamous Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca found himself shipwrecked on or near the island in 1528, referring to it as the “Isle of Doom,” using the island as the jumping off point for his well-known trek into Mexico. The area was named Galveston in the late 18th century when Spanish explorer Jose de Evia named the island Galvez-town or Galveztown, after Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid, the Count of Galvez. Permanent European settlements weren’t established until 1816 when pirate Louis-Michel Aury made landfall and used the island as a base of operations to support Mexico’s rebellion against Spain.

In 1900, the Galveston area was hit with a massive hurricane and still maintains the record as the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Following this terrible storm, a 10-mile long, 17 foot high seawall was constructed to protect the city from future floods and storm damage. The city also employed a team of engineers to design a plan to elevate a significant portion of the city behind the seawall, in an attempt at preserving Galveston in the event that another powerful storm would strike. Being that Galveston was a busy port city and trade center for the region prior to the storm; attempts were made to salvage its economic situation and bring in new investment opportunities. Unfortunately, the damage was done and Galveston never fully recovered, at least not in terms of economic prosperity. While the city is doing better today, Galveston Island consistently finds itself in the path of Gulf Coast hurricanes, the most recent being Hurricane Ike in 2008.
