Katy is a city located within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metro area, in Harris, Fort Bend and Walter Counties. Technically considered a suburb of Houston, Texas, Katy was named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, commonly known as the “K-T Railroad,” (now part of Union Pacific) which ran through Katy in the 19th century. Katy used to be known as Cane Island, after Cane Island Creek which runs a little bit west of the downtown area. The city was officially incorporated in 1945.
Residents of Katy unofficially split the city into two sections – “Old Katy” and “Greater Katy.” Old Katy fits within the actual city limits, lying for the most part north of Interstate 10. Greater Katy is made up of larger sections of unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend counties, mostly sitting east and southeast of Katy’s city limits. Greater Katy includes a lot of newer, more upscale housing developments and master planned communities, including: Cinco Ranch, Green Trails, Pin Oak Village, Grayson Lakes, Seven Meadows to name a few. Since, geographically speaking, Greater Katy lies within Houston’s extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) and not Katy’s – Houston controls the city and has the ability to annex it in the future. Should Houston decide to release the area’s ETJ to Katy, then and only then could Katy annex this area.
