Lake Jackson is a city in Brazoria County, Texas named after an oxbow lake on the outskirts of town. The lake takes its name from the Jackson family, whose plantation was located right on the lake. The city of Lake Jackson was built in the early 1940s and incorporated in 1944, its original purpose being to serve as a community for Dow Chemical Company employees working at a new plant built in the area.
The layout of Lake Jackson devised by architect Alden B. Dow, son of Dow Chemical Company founder Herbert Henry Dow. Dow briefly served as an apprentice to iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright, before opening up his own studio in 1934. Dow was also responsible for designing the look and feel of the six types of homes found in Lake Jackson when it was first built. All of the streets in Lake Jackson coming out of the downtown area end in the word “Way.” Examples include Center Way, Circle Way, Winding Way and Parking Way. If you happen to find yourself in Lake Jackson, look out for the intersection of “This Way” and “That Way.” When Dow designed the layout of the streets, he intentionally laid them so that they would seldom follow straight paths, leading to a lot of winding roads. This was done to prevent the costly and cumbersome task of removing trees during the construction process, a practice still in place in modern day Lake Jackson.
