Spring, Texas is a census-designated place located inside the extraterritorial jurisdiction of Houston in Harris County, 20 miles north of downtown. The area which is now known as Spring was originally home to the Orcoquiza Native Americans. Population growth in the area was pretty slow until the mid-1840s when German immigrants began to settle in the region. Spring saw another surge in population growth after the Civil War, when people from Louisiana and other parts of Southern United States began arriving. At the time, much of Spring’s income was coming from agriculture, specifically sugar cane and cotton.
The 1870’s brought with it the International and Great Northern Railroad, which had a stop in Spring open in 1871, naturally leading to another surge in the population. In 1884, the city had two steam saw and grist mills, two cotton gins, three churches, not to mention a few schools. In the early 1900s, the International-Great Northern Railroad expanded, connecting Spring to Fort Worth, therefore bringing more people to the area. In more recent history, 1969 to be specific, Goodyear Airship America (i.e. – The Goodyear Blimp) was based near Spring.
