Texas City is a city located in Chambers and Galveston counties on the southwest shores of the Galveston Bay. Back in 1891, three duck-hunting brothers from Duluth, Minnesota came to the conclusion that that the area, then known locally as Shoal Point, had major potential to become a bustling port city. Following their return to Minnesota, the brothers – Benjamin, Henry and Jacob Myers – formed the Myers syndicate, convincing investors to put up a substantial sum of money in order to buy 10,000 acres of Galveston Bay Frontage, including Shoal Point. The area was subsequently renamed Texas City.
In 1893, the Texas City Improvement Company (TCIC) had already been put together by a group of the original investors, who plotted and filed a plan for the town site. Determined to make Texas City into a booming port, the TCIC got to work, dredging an eight foot channel in the bay and building a railroad, connecting Texas City with 2 other major rail lines – Galveston, Houston and San Antonio and Galveston-Houston-Henderson. Despite this early success, TCIC eventually went bankrupt and was split into two entities: Texas City Company (TCC) and Texas City Railway Terminal Company (TCRTC), with TCC left in charge of city lots and utilities and TCRTC left to operate the railroad. Texas City was incorporated in 1911.
